MACHETTES: THE BEST MACHETES

The machete is an essential tool for use in several different environments. It can be used as a survival machete in the great outdoors for expeditionary purposes or as a tactical machete for use by armies in certain situations. The machete can also be used in its most basic form as a cutting and clearing tool for rough terrain.

Machetes are tools between a large knife and a small sword in size (around 30–50 cm long).

The machete knife are often used in agriculture as an agricultural tool to open the way in areas with reeds or trees and where the path is not yet marked. It is often used by the inhabitants of Africa, Asia, Latin America and in tropical countries where vegetation takes over the landscape and leaves and plants need to be removed. At first it was born as a tool to cut sugar cane.

In recent years, it has also become an ideal tool for bushcraft thanks to its versatility, with a bushcraft machete you can cut branches, build shelters and prepare food.  machete knife is a key piece of gear for any survivalist.

THE ORIGIN OF THE MACHETE

The name is Spanish in origin and means ‘little sledge hammer’. This says something about their usual sturdy build. Crushing a coconut should not be a problem for a good machete. The shape of machetes can vary. That relates to the origin of the particular type among other things. A Kukri is originally a Nepalese machete with a curved shape whereas the Parang and the Indonesian Golok have a much straighter blade. Many warriors also used a machete as it was the sharpest tool available to them. Machetes are jungle knives par excellence, as you can simply hack away around you with them.

The machete in recent years has gained ground as a defense weapon and gardening tool. Many agricultural workers carry a gardening machete  as a work and defense tool against wild animals. The US Army adopted them in the Vietnam War and the French Legion also used them as a hand-to-hand combat weapon.
