The Gladius Fulham 29359BK, often referred to as the Roman Sword, is a splendid tribute to a unique piece of history. Named after Fulham, the English city where the original specimens were discovered near the Thames, this gladius showcases a design that has sparked much debate among historians. Its dating places it after 43 AD, marking the beginning of the Roman campaigns in Britain under Emperor Claudius. The Fulham gladius stands as an intriguing hybrid, bridging the characteristics of the Mainz and Pompeii gladii, boasting the shorter length and parallel sides of the latter while retaining the elongated point of the former.
The Gladius Fulham 29359BK, or Roman Sword, is a lavishly adorned piece, capturing the essence of the Fulham original displayed at the British Museum in London.
Rich in ornate detailing, this gladius features a laton pommel and guard adorned with elegant grooves. Its sheath replicates the Fulham's decoration with embossed brass, depicting a hunting scene, complete with a deer, dogs, trees, and the iconic imagery of Romulus, Remus, and the wolf. The larger plate boasts a floral design with birds and butterflies, as well as two hares in the lower corners. The handle is made from nickel finishes on the knob, guard and handle, wrapped in black scabard with the aforementioned brass embellishments.
