The other Roman sword name is Gladius . It is a roman short sword with a double-edged steel blade. The hilt was very often a square or an octagon with an orbicular pommel and was made of wood, bronze or ivory. It was a weapon carried by the legionaries and was mainly used during the combat, thanks to the small size the pushes were made with very high accuracy. With the development of weapon, there were four primary kinds of this sword which are known as the Gladius Hispaniensis, the Mainz Gladius, the Fulham Gladius and the Pompeii Gladius. Gladius Hispaniensis (Hispanic)

It appears in the Roman republican era and is used above all in the Hispanic territory. It was the most used by tanto the infantry and the cavalry due to its great edge and long point.

Gladius Mainz

It receives the name of the German city Mainz where it appeared. Short and narrow blade in its central part. It had a very long point and was perfect for thrusts.

Gladius Pompeii (Pompeii)

It owes its name from its appearance in Pompeii (Italy). It was the most elaborate gladius, also aesthetically, with parts in bronze. The point was short and the blade was very well balanced.

It receives the name of the English city where it appeared. There are those who think that it is a variant of the Mainz and others of the Pompeii. It's probably a variation of both.
