The gladius Hispaniensis of the Republican era was characterized by its powerful blades, capable of causing terrible wounds (Livy 31.34.4), its long tip, perfect for rapier attacks, and a greater length than its later counterparts. This sword model has its origin in the Iberian Peninsula (Polybius 3.114; Suda, Machaira) and it seems that its basic structure was inspired by a late version of the Celtic sword of the La Tène type, modified by the Celtiberian peoples both in the shape of the leaf as in the structure of the sheath. There continues to be considerable debate about the dimensions and shape of the gladius Hispaniensis from the Republican era, due to the few archaeological finds and the vagueness of the sources in its description. This weapon was used by both infantry and cavalry.
